Such
a cool little amp....and honestly, a misundetstood one, too
as people often will just plug in expecting to instantly gel
and know its personality. It's really an amp that rewards
experimentation and playing with in order to get what I believe
is the best from it. It's an amp that's very touch sensitive
and early to breakup. This amp does NOT have a ton of headroom
but you can get some great cleans, just not at high levels.
That's not to say it won't PLAY loud. You can literally dime
this beast for some amazing full volume sweet breakup. It's
one of my favorite things about it. But the best is also delving
nailing the volume and mixing and matching levels to get the
best result. No, it's not as flexible as the bigger brother
Stereo Master 20 with the master volume and 20w on hand....
But it's a VERY fun amp.
So
important to get a feeling for it by looking at the diagram
for the circuit below. You'll see the tube layout but also
notice the really helpful flow chart for how this thing works
with the signal/inputs. You can plug in to AMP1 and get BOTH
outs or plug into EACH amp.
The little toggle switch to the left is actually a TWO-WAY
EQ switch, one for each amp, that filter the signal. You'll
notice you can turn up higher without overloading the bottom
end when switched down. This filters just a bit of the low
while UP is full range. Can be useful. Give it a try.
You can try less gain tubes in pre V1.... ie 5751 or 12AT7
etc.
Important points
- Make sure BOTH speakers are
plugged in.
- You can sub 6L6 family aside from the KT-66
- Cathode Bias means no need to bias
- GZ34 has more voltage and headroom - 5Y3 most sag and compression
- Tremolo is on AMP 1
- Reverb on AMP 2
